The “Four A’s,” (The American Association of Advertising Agencies) recently held the Talent 360 conference, which Norma Menkin attended. The conference brought together Chief Talent Managers in the Advertising and Media industries. In attendance, Norma had the opportunity to learn six important practices for building your employer brand.

Lessons learned:

  1. Hire the best people – Bring energetic and hard-working people to the workplace, give them a compelling vision, and empower them to achieve it. The people you hire are a direct reflection of your company and your brand; they must believe in what you do and have the desire to meet defined goals and deadlines.
  1. Demonstrate how you value your employees –Praise them on their accomplishments and work ethic, and move to a high trust organization; this will make them hungry for more success. Also, have more idea meetings for employees to freely express their observations. Those employees who do not feel appreciated will eventually feel the need to leave, and the last thing you want is to lose good employees.
  1. Pair a senior staff member with a younger staff member to mentor each other – The senior employee is solid, reliable, and hard working but may need a fresh young perspective in order to stay competitive in the workplace. The younger employee can learn fail-safe practices from the senior staff members who have been doing things successfully for quite some time. They will fuel each other!
  1. Effective onboarding is critical – build a culture of valuing and welcoming new people. This allows for a more engaged employee who feels a connection to the organization.
  1. HR Role is seen as more strategic than ever before – Human resources plays an essential role in developing a company’s strategy as well as handling the employee-centered activities of an organization.
  1. Manage out employees who are not producing – There should be a healthy sense of competition in the workplace and hunger for success. Numbers do not lie. Therefore, if an employee is not producing don’t hesitate to upgrade.
